Boarding contract/barn owner issues...

I didnt know where to put this. I am wondering about something because I feel like I am being pushed around as a boarder. I have 2 horses, they are very well looked after. They are my babies....

SO...in the contract where I am keeping my horses, its a basic contract...ride at your own risk, he's not responsible for anything basically blah blah blah...you know same ole typical barn contract. NO WHERE in the contract that I signed states that I have to use his dewormer. He just come up with this "deworming" thing like 3 months ago or so and charges 20.00 a horse/dewormer or 25.00 a horse for him to go in and deworm them. I can understand his point that ya he needs to keep the worms under control on his property as there are some boarders out there that don't deworm or are hardly there at all but this is a money grab for people like me who actually look after there horses. I stated to him when I first brought my horses in that, fine, I don't care he charges for dewormer but I will do them myself. He was supposed to deworm on the 1st this month and he didnt. He did them today and phoned me and said I owe him 50.00 for deworming my horses. I AM CHOKED. I don't like anyone handling my horses especially him because he is rough and my one horse doesnt like him and this guy is mean to him...how do I get around this? I am trying to figure out my rights as a boarder and what I can say to him that will put him in his place. He uses the same dewormer everytime he deworms, he orders it out of the states at 2.99 a tube. I am upset about this as well because I know using the same dewormer isnt going to help them much either. Please help. I just phoned the cops to find out but she said it may be a civil matter. I always thought that if it wasnt in contract then we didnt have to abide by it. There is a shortage of boarding out this way so I am stuck at this place. This guy that owns the barn isnt always easy to deal with either although at this point I don't care I am ready to tell him where to go and how to get there...Any help would be great!!

Hmm, I do not really have any ideas of what you could do, but that is really messed up. It is his fault the horses did not get wormed on the 1st of the month. You should not have to pay at all. I would just bring up to him that it is NOT in the contract anywhere, and that you should not have to pay.

Yikes. I am not sure what to tell you! Hopefully someone has some solid advice for you.

You said your contract says nothing about worming - but - does it say that new rules/policies can be added and must be followed?

Why in the world would you call the police? Because he wormed your horses? As they are on his property, he can handle them. In fact by signing the boarding contract you have willingly submitted them to be handled by him.

If you knew about the worming - why didn't you take care of your own horses and leave him a note?

Nope no where. I think you should re read my post to see why I am so upset. Its not the fact they were dewormed. He will not allow us to do our own horses, he claims we have to pay him for his own dewormer.

I think she has valid concerns. I wouldn't want to be forced to use the same dewormer every time PLUS that dewormer being from out of the US. If she is willing and able to deworm her own horses regularly, why is he taking it upon himself to charge $20-25 per horse to do it? I would be upset too.

I also see nothing wrong with contacting the police to ask questions, which is what I gathered she did from her OP.

The OP is in Canada. Her BO ordered the wormer from the US.

It is still rather unreasonable to charge someone that much more for something they have always done themselves.

Mls- ya I knew that, I made it clear I would pay him for the dewormer to deworm them myself. Get it straight. Not for him to just go ahead after the first of the month and deworm them without my permission. No where in that contract says anything about deworming/shots/farrier whatsoever. Then he tries to turn around and tell me I owe him 50.00 for handling/deworming my horses, I think not. No one handles my horses without my permission, its simple, and he knew that to begin with. If that's not clear enough for you to understand then I don't know what is.
