We have good quality hay(we grow our own), so I know what is in it, and its nutritional value, so we are not guessing on our hay qaulity year to year. So most our horses just get hay and a 8oz cup of pellets (12%), flax, and Equine choice (pro/prebiotic). They probably would be fine w just the hay, but Im a firm beilver in pro/prebiotics, so only reason they get the pellets is to add it to the feed.
We have trace mineral blocks in all our corrals/pastures.
As far as supplements for our performance horses. This will be varied from horse to horse. But every on of our horses gets, flax, Equine Choice (brand of pre/probiotics), Oil, Gelatin (just plain Knox type....the kind you buy in the gorcery store), it works great for stong hoofs..and is much cheaper than over the counter horse type stuff, such as Biotin or Biotime.
They get @ minimum 1 cup (8 oz) pelleted complete feed 10%, just enough to add the above into their feed. Again this will vary upon the horse...my seniors will get a senior feed (14%), plus Beet pulp, our young ones (yearlings up till 5 year olds ) get a mineral supplement which my vet has our local feed store make for him.
I try to do as little as possible for the most part, and if I do add anything to my horses feed, I try to go the more natural route opposed to buying Brand name products, as they tend to be overly expensive, and have other additives that I may/may not want. And the natural product can be much cheaper, and give me the same, if not better results. Fo rexample I use Chammollie Leaves in my horses grain to calm them down before a show or prior to a vet visit If I need, opposed to using drugs such as ACE...works great!
