Thinking of getting round bales and wondering what type of feeder you use if any. We are renting a farm and a few years ago the owners lost a horse to botulism. Everyone I know feeds round bales, and I've never known anyone that had horse get botulism. You can vaccinate for it if you're worried about it.
You want to keep a roundbale off the ground to keep it out of the wet. We use a normal horse hay ring and place the bale on a couple pallets.
I 750-800 lbs round bale will last 2 horses about 2 weeks in the coldest part of winter if they're out 24x7 based on my experience. If you have pasture in the summer, they won't go through the whole bale before you'll start losing some to mold after it rains.
