Safely Spraypainting Hay Racks?

We found 2 old hay racks in our old dairy barn, and plan on installing them in the stalls. However, they're a very ugly color: Kind of like barf green. They also have the slightest bit of rust on them. Plus, it will look good if it matches the rest of the stall! So, if we spraypaint them black with rustoleum (sp?) spraypaint, will it be safe for the animals? They will probably be drying/without use for a week or so after the painting. Thanks, AJ!
