Stock pond as a water source

The owner of the property where I keep my horse just bought 70 acres of adjacent land. She is fencing off a part of it for me(very nice of her!). The area she is fencing off is large with good grass growth, even in February. But it has no water line running to it. It does have a stock pond. The water looks fairly clean, not smelly or gross looking. I am not sure if my thoroughbred has ever drank from a pond before or if a pond is an acceptable water source in the first place. I would hate to turn down all that grass though. Will he be fine with just the pond, or will I be carting buckets?

Help me horse forum! You're my only hope!

It may depend on how the pond fills. I have one and the water comes up through the ground into the pond. It is pretty clean, but in the summer when the water table drops and the water isn't coming up as fast to kinda clean it out the water becomes stagnant. I also have a stock tank so they can have their choice.

It depends on how the pond is fed.

If it's fed from runoff, then this summer it might turn rancid.

If it's a spring fed pond then it will probably be fine year round, unless it freezes.

I have a pond, and I let the horses drink from it until the weather gets hot. Then I try to keep them out of it.

They do love to take a dip in it on a hot summer day, but I really don't like them drinking from it during hot weather.

Honestly, it's really hard to say, you need to keep an eye on it.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

My horses drink out of dugouts, and they have the option of drinking out of the troughs in the summer, but they prefer the dugout water. They play in the dugouts too :) very entertaining to watch them frolic and cool off.
