My first time ever riding this horse and his first time participating in barrel racing :)

Very, very curious --- where were you competing in barrels where they set them up on a GRASS course?



That's just asking for a horse to slip and fall.

At a agricultural show, it wasn't extremely competitive barrel racing, just part of the gymkana, and because of this no one went very fast or hard.

Just an FYI: Horses can very easily slip when they are asked to turn tightly around a barrel even at a mere trot when you ask them to do it on slick grass like there is in the photos. Your second photo you posted, you are actually galloping around that barrel on that grass. BIG RISK for slipping and falling. I don't care how slow a lope you were doing. For example, in your photo, what if his hind leg (that has all his back weight on it) had slipped out from under him at that moment? You both would have hit the ground, which poses an injury risk to the horse and to the rider as well.

I would definitely bring it to the attention of the committee that runs the show that next year, they should find an dirt arena to do it. Grass is SO dangerous when you are asking your horse to make tight small turns, like around a barrel.

It doesn't appear the horse on grass is moving near as fast as some polo ponies I've seen on grass..
