There are quite a few different choices...The most common choice is braided parachute cord, it's not expensive and you can get get different colors to match all of your tack. Then there are leather braided reins, other types of braided reins, cotton gaming reins, and it just goes on and on...IMO, the best way to go for a beginner is the parachute cord braided reins with knots on them to know where to place your hands..

Here are a few websites you can browse through and get a feel for what you like.

Braided Barrel Reins
Smith Brothers - Search Results for barrel racing reins

I like these but they stretch a little..Sierra has a pair.
DiscoTack Braided Barrel Racing Reins

These are nice reins..
Martha Josey Extra Thick Knot Barrel Rein - The Tack Stop

I'm not a fan of these but some people like them.
Saddles Tack Horse Supplies - Weaver Leather Barrel Reins with Rubber Grip
I have a pair just like this that I like.

Like drum said I have a pair of the disco reins and I love them but they faded after just a few uses but they were beautiful when I first got them.

My all time fav are these Braided Barrel Reins
Mine that I have are kind of stiff but its because I got more then a 6 plait, I think mine are the 8 plait. I absolutely love the way the knots are, they are like braided on.

Everyone will have their personal preference.

As for myself, I use braided nylon reins with knots. Love them!

DrumRunner posted a great list of all the other options out there.

I used to use a leather roping rein, but recently bought what beau159 posted (except in black :P ) and I love them. They're awesome.

The Discotack reins are now available again on the Sassy Cactus website. We've improved them so there is less stretch and less fade.

I wish the people that make these barrel reins would make longer ones as well- they're so pretty but too short for daily riding!

I am happy to make reins in any length. My horse is pretty big so I make mine longer to suit him.
