When I was a kid I had a $75 Appy gelding that consistently beat all the girls in my 4-h club that weighed half what I did and rode AAA pedigreed horses because I could put that horse anywhere I needed him.

If your horse can't run a pretty decent reining pattern then you shouldn't be trying to run barrels.
That made me laugh about you beating all the other kids. I bet they were like "Who does he think he is?!" LOL.

I never competed anywhere but small time locally, but when I was younger I rode a 15.2 hh Missouri Fox Trotter mare. She was a solid 18 second barrel mare. Everyone would snort and laugh at my gaited mare until they saw her turn the barrels on a dime and bring it home like Secretariat. Lol. Not to mention, I had the smoothest ride out there! LOL

But if I were to be competing serious then I would probably go with a QH. We are big fans of Two Eyed Jack here. All our horses are close decendants of him, but all we use them for are roping horses.

Breed? Quarter horse, paint, appy :) Paints are qh cropout so most have qh blood. I agree that WP bloodlines will generally not make a barrel horse but than my daughter has a horse that is bred to the hilt to run (registered name is Dash of a Jet) and he wins in WP and HUS. Pee your pants fast as her winning barrel racing friend told her but his heart isn't there. My old WP paint was not happy and is now working cattle.

One of my daughter's best friend has a grade appy they took in on back board that is screaming fast. Didn't know a thing about barrels before they started him.

Paint and quarter horse would be the best choice for high level competing but I have a 3/4 margan 1/4 quarter horse and she is solid 1D in my devision.
a lot of it has to do with heart!
