Barrel Horse Prospect Critique?

Be as honest as you want. I would like to start Barrel Racing on him, I have no idea how a barrel horse should be put together I know he doesn't look like most barrel horses, being he is so cowbred but over all as far as conformation goes do you think he will be successful? He has the attitude to do whatever I ask and has a decent handle on him as I use him for Team Sorting. I just want to know his conformation flaws, what may hinder him in the barrel racing world!

He looks pretty powerful, though I wouldn't judge confo when it comes to potential for barrels. I've seen some horses with not-so-good confo who burn on the barrels.
However, since i'm no expert at what flaws might hinder him at the sport, i'll just try & point out the obvious.
First off, his pasterns look a little long. He also has a slightly too steep of a slope to his hooves. His legs look nice & he's got a nice butt! Lol
I like his shoulder & muscling in that area. His neck isn't bad, though maybe a little long... more toning & muscle could fix this.
The angle of his croup is a little sharp but I don't see how he would do poorly in barrels.

His hoof angles need to be addressed ;)

He has a nice sloped shoulder...his croup could have more muscling but that will come. Id also like to see his hocks a little lower set.
Nice neck tie in...strong back...

Overall not bad!

His hooves look way better, he was very overdue to be shod in that photo! Thanks for your replies, I am looking forward to getting him started on the pattern!

hello again neighbor, yes we have fixed his under run heels. The first pics were taken last spring, since then I have switched farriers and gotten his hooves taken care of.

Awesome :)
I've seen many a barrel horse go lame because of improper angles :)

I moonlight in nutrition and farrier work(it will be incorporated in my major)

All I can see that would be worth worrying over would be his hoof angels, other than that he looks fine. You will need to do a lot of backing and long trotting to get his butt beefed up enough to handle the turns and have the go neccessary. Over all he looks a whole lot nicer than some of the horses who can run a decent pattern.
