Does anyone grad the reins and smack one side of their neck?
My mare responds to that and runs pretty fast!

I would understand how racehorse's dont really need a kick to run fast.
Same thing for my mare. they really need to know when to get going..especially in barrel racing! i do the same.. some horses just are harder to get into a diffrent gait! like my QH :) racehorses are diffrent from barrel racers... i love my QH :)

I use different techniques for different horses. Most you kick, others you use a quirt, others smack their neck/rump with the reins (we use split reins and barrel race for fun, so they're long enough) or use those for over/under. A couple horses all you have to do is give a hearty squeeze with your legs and a light kick; another all you have to do is kiss/cluck your tongue to them. It mostly depends on the horse. (:

For the most part, though, I combine the kissy/tongue clucking noises with kicking to get my horse to haul it!

my horse was born to run! any chance she gets she is gone! all i do for her to run is lean forward and really loosen my reigns. sometimes i squeeze or kick her too but there is no point becuse she runs her hardest anyway i just to it just in case :P
