Talking Barrel Racing Training tips please (:

So my uncle is doing cutting lessons with a friend he knows. And my uncle called me to say that he was more interested in people like I am (who doesn't know very much about barrel racing) to train with him to do barrel racing!!! I said yes, and I am meeting him next saturday! Any tips before I start?

Thanks so much!

Well the main thing would be that he needs to know the basics.
I really suggest asking him to find a real barrel trainer just to get him started as it will be much more beneficial to learn the correct way then having to fix if you train him wrong. I am horrible at explaining so I wont even attempt except to tell you to keep him at a walk/trot till he gets everything down fluid before having him ask for a fster pace.

Oh well see that confused me I thought you were saying he wanted you to train him -_- sickness is messin with my head. Anyways either way you say he is doing cutting lessons? I would make sure this trainer he is at or your uncle (not accusing just stating) know exactly what they are doing so both of you and your horses learn the correct way. Undoing bad training can be a pain in the arse and can be dangerous as well as slow you down on times. Just my two cents as I had a bad trainer who trained me competely wrong before I met my current trainer who has had to do some major work with me going right.

But some good things to have before you get into barrels is to have full control of both front end and hind end, a good side step, a good stop and one of our trainers teaches straights..which as I said I can't explain well however I will attempt. You will start off at a trot (till your horse understands) stay on the rail till you get to the middle of pole 1 and pole 2 circle in and keep your horse bent and shoulder up. Continue on to pole 2 only when your horse does this correctly do this both from the right side of the poles and the left.

Your welcome. You can find some tips and exercises on youtube from good trainers as well. Fallon taylor has some good ones as well as martha josey and im sure others do as well.

I wouldn't watch Fallon's videos unless you want a notorious lying horse trader giving you advice.

Dena Kirkpatrick has some great videos on YouTube. There's also alot of helpful people on the barrelhouse world forum.
