I agree with smrobs - basics first, get her responding to the bit and work on basic conditioning and fitness as well. Speed is the LAST thing you need to worry about training for barrels. You need solid basics, a fine-tuned, responsive horse, a calm and focused horse (hot/spooky/jumpy horses tend to have more issues running fast & clean), and then worry about training the pattern and actually running.

A fit and focused horse is the place to start in my book!

lol, my mom's guy (qh) was around 20 when he first got a saddle on... he was "unrideable". He was barrel-trained and won some shows, so i'd say go for it. He still wants to run barrels like a manic... he's 27 now! It always depends on the horse, not the age ;)

Plus, when she runs she puts her head down. Now I don't know if she's going to buck or if its just how she runs.

Dad, I realize you hate horses. But see that picture <-. You bought me that horse, so therefore, this is obsession is your fault.

start with addressing pain issues and training issues before you worry how she runs.

I got her responding to the bit. Walk/trot the pattern. Now were working on loping. And neck reigning.

my mare is also eight years old. I had been working with her on barrels for just about 3 weeks until she got it. She just wasnt fast yet, but she got it
