Cheap Barrel Racing Tack?

I am looking for a cheap barrel saddle that I can ride my QH in. I want to start barrel racing, and I have a good saddle, but I find barrel saddles to be WAYYY more comfy for anything! Thanks...
(Saddles can be under $300)

$300 is a very low price range for a saddle.

What size seat do you ride in?

If I were you, I'd save up a little more and try to get about $600 in the bank. $600 can get you a nice QUALITY used saddle. Maybe even a little less. But you have to remember that if a saddle is "cheap" there is a reason it's cheap. Quality is bad, and can sore up a horse fast. AND have zero resale value when you outgrow it.

If you have a good saddle right now, why not just use that saddle until you have enough to buy a good barrel saddle? You wont NEED a barrel saddle when your just starting out anyway. The basics of barrel racing can be ridden in any saddle.

I would have to say BuckOff41570 is very correct when
Speaking about purchasing a cheap saddle (OF GOOD QUALITY)
To ride barrels in.
I ride barrels and know that without a good saddle
My horse gets sore spots and is very unhappy when
The saddle hits him in spots that hurt(when it doesnt fit)
..the better the saddle fits the better the ride will be!

I would suggest looking for cheap saddles at:
  • StateLineTack (or other magizines)
  • Garage Sales (YES!)
  • Local Tack Stores(You might be able to talk them down)
  • Online...EBAY!
  • Barrel racing sites from your local barrel racing communities
  • will have saddles and such for sale as well.

Make sure you know-
  • Your seat size
  • Color preference and style (does it match my headstall?)
  • Brands you may want
  • What stirrup lengths are on saddle
  • What a good price is(600$-1200$)
Saddles can be expensive(be prepared!)

You don't have to have a barrel saddle to barrel race. It's a nice thing to have, but not a necessity. I barrel raced in a roping saddle for a while, and I know a girl that barrel races (and wins) at local shows in an English saddle.

Most barrel shows I have been to, there have been more than a few people selling extra saddles.

Ditto to Buckoff and KSCountrygirl.

How do YOU feel when you buy a cheap pair of shoes and walk around in them all day? They hurt, right? So how do you think your horse feels when you buy a cheap saddle and expect him to perform in it?

Save your money and buy a quality USED saddle. A good name-brand saddle that has been taken care of by its previous owner will still last you years and years to come. As Buckoff said, at least invest $600 or more into a good saddle. I say "invest" because that is what it is. You buy yourself a good saddle and you can easily have it for 20+ years or more.
