Okay, first off, I'm not a barrel rider, I'm a trail rider, but my one friend was asking me if she can train for barrel racing in her pleasure/trail saddle and if she can use it for barrel racing at local shows or does she have to have a barrel saddle. I have no idea and figured I'd ask the experts here. Any advice/opinions/help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I say run in whatever you're comfortable with. It doesn't matter in local shows. Once they get going faster though I'd put on a barrel saddle to help sit you better.
I know a couple younger girls that run in a pleasure saddle. I think they eventually want to get a barrel saddle when they get more serious in the games but it does just fine dinking around
I didn't start riding in an actual barrel saddle until I was about 13.
Grew up on the cheap western/pleasure saddles. You technically don't need a saddle at all to barrel race.
At local shows for gaming events, there usually are not any rules regarding tack (like there would be for western pleasure or for reining, for example). But always check with the show you will be competing at for a list of rules.
