Smile Critique our barrel video!

Beau is a 13-year-old breeding stock Paint horse, 16.1 hands high. He's been running barrels since he was 4-years-old. I have trained him myself (which took a few habit changes when I trained a few things wrong intitially .... always learning!! )

This video is from Sunday, July 24th, 2011 at a nearby horse show. This is the 2nd year they've had the horse show and it pulls a nice crowd and we really enjoy it. I believe there was about 15 people entered in the Senior Barrel Racing. We took 2nd place with an 18.9 - something run. We've ran in this arena before for barrel jackpots and our fastest time was a 17.6. However, I'm not really sure if the barrels were set up on the stakes that they use for the jackpots, so that would make a difference on the time.

For my little "disclaimer", this is the first time we have ran barrels since August of last year. No practicing since then. Nothing! I'm barely squeaking in riding time on the weekends as it is, since I am on clinical rotations for my last year of optometry school. So he really isn't in the best shape that I like him to be for running, but we did the best with what we had.

Also, this show has a rule for NO running starts. The gate must be shut before you start your event. When I have run at this arena for jackpots, we did do a running start and he does so much better with those! He's a large horse and it takes him some time to "get going". I tried something new this year at this show and kind of allowed him to run in, but just circled him to one side or the other (depending which way we were going to turn first for the event) and that seems to work a little better for him.

First barrel was really slow on the back side. He was kind of scrambling for footing, which wasn't the greatest.

Second barrel was okay.

Third barrel approach was slow. I should have pushed him harder to the turn so he wouldn't slow down as much. That's one of my bad habits that I need to constantly work on, and I should have been focused on that.

Anyway, here's that run from Sunday.

I think you pretty much know what was off ;)

He's obviously out of shape, and not engaging his hind. If he were, hed have better turns :)

ETA: watched some of your other videos...he looks off in his backend

Do excersizes to get him off his front end... he will engage his hind end more to push up to the next barrel. His turn are tight and his placement is good too:) great job on training him:) if you live around mountians, take him up the steep trails, they build stamina and leg/ rear end muscle.

He's obviously out of shape
I guess I can't say that it is THAT obvious. He never looks like he's moving fast, but he usually clocks pretty good. He's a big horse with a big stride. Although yes, he isn't in as good as shape as I want for running barrels as I did state in my original post. I guess since he's not fat or anything, I guess I don't see it as being extremely obvious. I do agree that something was off on his first barrel, as he really stuttered on the backside to get going again. I'm assuming it probably was the ground, as it was really drying up by that part of the day and was just hard as a rock! I was walking/running on it for some events after that and I myself didn't even like running around on it. Hard and very rough.

He prefers deep ground, so he can really dig in around the turns. He does okay with shallow stuff like this, but I can certainly tell that he does better in deep ground.

But can you elaborate on what is wrong with the rest of his turns?? I do need to push him deeper into the pocket to keep his momentum (but that's mostly my rider error, not so much him) but I don't think our other turns were too bad. So can you explain why you think so?

Again, can you be more specific on that? He does tend to push off with both hind legs on the ground at the same time (such as when coming out of a turn), but he has almost always done that as long as I have had him. When I took him to a Lynn McKenzie clinic a few years back, he was doing the same things in our video critiques there but she said he was just fine, and she has a keen eye for things. I was mostly concerned with his left front foot because he has a lot of scar tissue from an old injury that was a very serious and deep cut around the pastern. I sure would never have guessed I'd be barrel racing him ever again! But she also said that was fine. We've had him to the vet, and even had several judges look at him (for halter classes) and no one has even said he favors that leg or shows any signs of it being more than a blemish. Back legs included.

But anyway, is that what you were seeing for him being "off in the backend"? Or something else?

What type of exercises do you recommend?

His turn are tight and his placement is good too
Thank you. He does always get to the pocket nicely, and we never tip a barrel (except one time 2 years ago he hit the first barrel with his nose on the backside somehow ... and pushed it over!!! Of all things.....). But I do need to push him deeper to keep speed and keep him from rating too much.

Sadly, no mountains. We are in the flat mid-west. Only decent hills nearby are a 4 mile ride to get to them. We try to go over there every once in a while though.
