Question Different types of Races.

I was really interested in what the difference was in all these types of barrel races: Futurity, Derby & Exhibition, and everything you know about each one.

Thankss:))

Futurities are for 4 year olds, Derbys are for 5 year olds. Both are for any breed, grade horses can compete as long as a vet proves the age. Its just about the age, a futurity horse is not allowed to be ran in a real class until December 1st of their 3 year old year then they run the futurities as a 4 year old. As for exhibition classes, a warm up. It is not an actual class it is a practice run with a timer up.

You don't need to enter Derbies. They are expensive and you have to already be enrolled for them. You can run NBHA, IBRA or any other open association for alot cheaper. They are for any age of horse though sometimes they have a junior horse class for 5 and under. But its divided by the riders age. Those might be your better option.

Okay! So I could just go to any of the NBHA or IBRA? Do I need to be signed up with them or no?

No. But NBHA has a non member fee. It doesn't cost much to join either one

Here we had something called "Jackpot Barrels". Sorry I am not a barrel racing person, but I entered & won enough money to buy beer & dinner!!

Jackpot around here means full payout. We have those every Wednesday night at my barn. Its getting less popular though...
