I have a 15.2 hh Quarter Horse who used to be a barrel racer. Now, everytime I ask him to trot he starts to canter, then leading to a gallop. I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?
Don't let him. Work from the walk asking him for a trot. As soon as he breaks into a canter go back down to a walk. another suggestion is work him on a long line and get voice commands down. walk trot and canter. Don't let him anticipate what your going to ask him, so keep switching it up. hope I helped!
Its just going to take time and a lot of patience. If your horse really loved to barrel race, it will be hard to get it out of his head. Start back at the basic. Walk until he listens, trot (and hold him back) until he listens. dont let him win this battle. remember, everytime you do anything with your horse its influencing him in one way or another. Be patient and keep at it...
Dont woory that is the same with my ex- barrel racer he was a two time barrel racing champion! and he like too just go straight into a canter and slowly goes into a Gallop !! and He is 23 years old and he always does the barrel turning. and Cecil is always wanting to race! When we are in the the field we trot on the way out and he likes to canter and or gallop on the way back! Cecil Is really fast and he puts his head down so..Dont Feel bad you are not the only One out there! WIth a horse like that !!!
I have a horse like this and he always wants to run, I still run him on barrels, but to get him to listen to you do small figure 8s so he give you his head and then he should know who's boss and shouldn't push you around Posted via Mobile Device
