First Race!

My first race of the season was today. It was also the first race for my horse. I couldn't be happier with him. He dis awesome for his first time. We went a little slow but we had two clean runs and that is the good part. The winning 1D time for the first round was 15 something and we ran a 23. Second round was same winning time but we cut off 4 seconds and ran a 19.05! I thought that was a great improvement! So proud of my boy and myself.

One thing: Get that hand off the horn except for when you sit down to turn!

Other than that, it was great!!!!! I want to go to a show now...... gggggaaaaah

Awesome, job!! I love your tack

I'll have to agree with QH & also maybe shorten your reins?? I've been taught to ride with super short reins when doing barrels so it stood out to me.

Other than that, you two looked fabulous!!

Not bad at all for a first time out!

I agree that you need to shorten your reins and keep that hand off your horn. It looks like he needs support in his turns too (he's getting front-endy and turning a bit too soon). So use both hands to push him into the pocket where he should be, since you aren't working for speed right now anyway.

Looks like he enjoys it!

Thanks for all the encouraging comments! I was SUPER nervous on my first round, the video was from the second run, I was a little more relaxed. I wonderd about my reins being to long, my horse really likes his head so I feel bad if I shorten my reins up any. I guess I will just have to hold my hand further forward! One question though, why is it so important to keep your hand off the horn in between the barrels? He takes off from the barrels so hard that I have to hold myself in and I sometimes forget to let go of the horn. I agree I need to do it just wondered why it was important. Also, thanks for the comment on the tack! Shows that nylon tack can be just as pretty if you get the right color!!

Better seat = better balance for you & your horse.

IMO it also looks better :)

I'll never forget my first run. We had practiced for months and my gelding ran into the arena (we were both SO nervous), made a big circle in the middle, and ran back out. I was like...WHY WAS I NOT MORE PREPARED?? Haha

You look good, though! I would suggest maybe opening up your pocket more on the 2nd barrel. My teacher loved Josey, so I'm big on the perfect circle method. And yes, agree with the ^^ comments. Hand off the horn until you shut down for your turn.

Are your reins knotted? I couldn't tell. But the knotted reins really helped me to remember where my hands should be.

Also...Great job on coming into the alley!! So many racers blow into the alleyway and that is SO dangerous. I love how you brought him up nice and calm. I always make my horses make several quiet turns before letting them begin. Good job!
