Today was the first show of my season. And it was fantastic! I'm so thrilled by how it went and I couldn't be happier for how well my horse performed. The horse I'm riding this year is owned by a friend that no longer has time to show with 3 horses. So I get his really good one.
Avalanche is a 16 year old QH/Morgan Mare. Only 14.0 hands high. And she's absolutely phenomenal!
Our first event was Kegs, which I'm not very good at with her. Avalanche knows her business but she tends to muscle her way through them and will often hit them unless you pull her off. There are 8 "mini kegs" set up in a straight line and you have to weave through them as fast as you can. We won! With a 17.064! Not the greatest time, but for ONCE it was clean! I don't have a video of this event, sadly.
Second event is Speed and Action. My favorite event ever with this mare. She's pretty much unbeatable at it. Everyone was running a mid-high 10 seconds, and we broke into 9.917 to take first place! Yippee!
Third event is Pole Bending. Another event I dread with this mare. Like I said, she likes to muscle her way through. Well, I'm relearning to sit back further in the saddle with this mare and try to stay out of her way as best as I can. She can rock a pole pattern. She turned great at the ends, but the 2nd end turn I was supposed to crop her coming out of the turn and I was a little bit behind and cropped her after passing the 2nd pole weaving back up. That pushed her a little harder and I didn't have time to react when she bolted forward more and I totally slammed us into the pole. My mistake. It hurt and I learned my lesson. (You can hear me say "ouch" in the video LoL) I was actually very happen with this pole run, even though I screwed up. She ran a 23.4 regardless and if I didn't knock that pole, we would have taken home another 1st place. The person who got first ran a 25.6.
Fourth is barrels. It was dark and you probably can't see the greatest, but it's there. We place 5th with a 20.645. First place person was 20.227 so you can see how close we were. Plus Avalanche kinda tripped at the 2nd barrel and I think if it wasn't for that flaw, we would have taken this class too. Not bad for a 14 hand high horse. She can definitely compete with the big boys...especially since this is a large barrel pattern!
Last event was down and back. I placed 3rd with a 9.18, 2nd place was only a 9.13 and the person that took first was 9.05. We were so close. I don't have a video of this event either.
Sp & Act...1st
Not bad for the first show and only conditioning for 1 month with this horse. I'm very happy with how she performed. She walked right into the arena for me which has been problematic in the past. She ran well, stayed off of the barrels, poles, and kegs. She is a pretty ratey girl so I really have to push push push, but she'll never run by something. I was a little nervous because I did a bit change from a gag-hack to a 3 piece snaffle with a little bit of a shank (similar to a JR cowhorse) and she did just wonderful for me. She really likes this bit so yippee!
If any of you see anything that I could improve on, please let me know. Besides running my knee-cap into a pole. (Didn't that thing fall very quickly? LoL)
