Have you tried, after warming her up, letting her just breeze the outside of the arena and let her open up without turning barrels? My old mare was so hard to break of this habit. We ended up not running her barrels but instead ran her poles and gamed on her. I think her issue was she was bored with the same thing all the time. She really competed and opened up when I switched her.

Maybe try some different patterns in the arena with the barrels to help her break the same old same old.

At a competition, no I haven't. At home or practicing I almost never turn the barrels, except first, which she never has issues with that one. She does do other patterns, arena race, poles (which she is great at), and stake race. She was off the pattern for a year and a half to see if she was just bored.

My roping mare shuts down on the pattern BIG TIME indoors. Like BAD.

I started taking a little crop with me and tapped her and gave her a reminder going into the barrel that she should get her butt going. If you do that and ride he BY the barrel, that's okay, she'll start to push harder going into the barrel.

Having a crop or over an under is an idea too, but be sure not to over use them, some horses don't respond well to them in some cases. I personally use an over and under that has a little zip to it and it works great for my mare.

I would suggest working on speed changes with control. Ask her to do a circle at a walk, trot, lope and then ask her for some more speed. Don't be afraid to let her open up a little bit in the arena doing this. Make sure first and foremost you have control at all times, if she starts to realize you don't have control at speeds she will more than likely start to test you. Try and see how that works for her and let us know and go from there! :)

My horse is another one of those who just won't open up in an indoor arena. No amount of urging will get him up past a fast lope.
