How do you train your hand to be lower?

I have this bad habit of having my hand being too far into the air. Is there any way to fix myself of the habit?
I feel like I'm not setting my horse up that well even though I make decent runs on her.

I had the same issue, but mine went hand in hand with not going to the horn. So, when I got the rhythm of going to the horn, my hand automatically went down.

Really, just exaggerate having your hands low when you practice, build that muscle memory, and when it comes to actually running, you'll hopefully just do it.

I was always told to pull to my pockets. If you work on it consistantly while practicing, it will become habit.

It just takes a lot of consistency and focus. I used to have a habit of going in for a run and completely forgetting how to ride correctly, like not sitting down or using my feet or looking or hand and body posture. Now I have pulled my head out and realized it isn't fair to my horse to ride that way and I have really made sure to focus when making a run. Going to your hip/pockets is a good way of doing it because that way it gives you a focal point on what exactly you need to do around the barrel. I would try that, it has for sure helped me a lot and truly has loosened my made up a lot and she is making smoother turns because of it. Good luck! :)

I tend to find my hands lift when my wrists and elbows are tense. If I notice it happening I deliberately tense then relax the muscles and my hands fall into the correct position. It only ever happens in lessons for me - I'm so busy stressing about my position that I get myself out of position lol.

They say it takes 26 days to create a NEW habit, changing it from an old one.

Right now, your muscles and subconscious remember to put your hand where it is now (which really isn't that bad. Possibly a little high, but if she's making nice runs....). You've got to re-train your muscles and brain to hold your hand lower.

That means you're going to have to actually and actively think about it during your runs, and especially during practicing. Until it become automatic.

Maybe it's just me, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you are winding up pulling on her really bad after the barrel, it needs some changing. But that's just me:P
