I'll get a video when I can.... it's all snow and ice here tho.

She is pretty ram-jam so a ton of rate exercises are NOT going to hurt her at all

My favorite is exactly what Beau posted, go to the barrel at different speeds, stop, disengage the hind end towards the barrel, back 3 or 4 steps then continue around the barrel. I just find it to be the most effective and really starts to teach rate.

I finally got my riding area harrowed and my barrels set up.
I did the exact exercise mentioned above and squiggy being the fast learner she is, she started to rate herself when I started to sit. I only did w/t and let her lope around third once, but she impressed me after how long of a break she's had from barrels.

I think she just needs a lot of w/t work so I will have to push her instead of just let her go when we get to loping the pattern.

Do any of you have a video of this exercise? I'd love to see it!

Couldn't find a video on the internet. Maybe in a month or two (when my practice area dries up finally!) I can make one.

But to show you what should NOT happen, watch my video and at the end on my 3rd barrel (when I stop him at the barrel to teach him rate), watch how his hip moves steps away from the barrel. That should not happen. I didn't even realize it happened, until someone else pointed it out to me. Use your outside leg, to push that inside hip inward. ALways keep the hip in! I really make sure I always do that with Red.

I will try to get a video of it next time I ride her, or another horse, on the pattern.

Here's a video I found. I watched it without audio, but she does the same exercise, but doesnt push the horses hip towards the barrel.

Great thanks guys! I love the exercise, trying to show someone an example but can't get the right light in our arena.

Great! LOL. I recorded it again, and again but just looked like a big green blob plodding around the arena. We have green skylights of all colors and it tends to make pictures / videos etc green tinted, especially at night.
