I'd much rather see something like reining become an Olympic sport. Just my opinion:)

^ Agreed. If we want to see more equestrian events added, our best bet is going to be with reining. You have to remember that not a lot of countries ride Western. Reining is gaining in international popularity, but speed events aren't run in many countries.

Another thing to consider is that many people are angry that so much of the NRHA's funds are going toward promotion for Olympic inclusion when it could be put to other use. Just some things to consider, though it would be very cool for barrel racing to be a Olympic sport

To become an Olympic sport it needs to have international presence and numbers. Barrel racing simnply does not. I have never even heard of a barrel racing event in Europe.

If you want a western horse event included then your best bet is reining, however they will have to compete with the international presence of endurance and vaulting to be in with a chance. It would also have to kick out one of the other equestrian sports and that is not likely concidering thier international presence.

Anouther issue is that to be included in the olympics the sport has to fall under FEI rules, including all thier welfare and drug rules

Finaly, the sports in Rio have already been decided as they have had to start building stadia for them. so your best bet would be the 2020 games!

Not sure I agree really. I mean its not popular in the rest of the world (or certainly I have never seen any events like it here). Also I hate the idea that they would get rid of another equestrian sport for it, eventing, dressage and show jumping are very popular all around the world, wouldn't make sense to replace that with something far less popular. Not to mention a lot of people who do the sport at Olympic level will be unable to from then on. Just my opinion.

Some of these replies makes me chuckle.

Let's see....Brazil is a powerhouse....China is catching up.....Italy has added alot of high dollar futurities...Australia...Canada....and I'm sure there are a few other those are just the more dominant countries.

This subject has been beaten and argued to death on the Internet and other forums. The FEI is an absolute JOKE.

red horse in what way is the FEI a joke?
The FEI is the international governing body for horse sport, if you want something in the olympics or WEG then you have to go through the FEI

and those countries are dominant in what exactly

RIDE your horse FORWARDS and keep him STRAIGHT

I'm not as well versed as someone of your discipline would be....but I formed that opinion after reading a loooong debate, as well as getting that opinion from a few dressage riders. My friend competed in jumpers and she also agrees its a joke. Basically all of the loopholes and rules.

Barrel racing of course.

This isn't really something I wish to get into, but if power walking, darts and ping pong are Olympic sports I think barrel racing and reining have more than a right to be there.

I was soooo trying to stay out of this discussion....

But I whole-heartedly believe we should get Reining, Vaulting, Driving, and Endurance in before we move on to barrel racing.

I would, however, like to see things like Barrels, Reined Cowhorse, pattern classes like Western Horsemanship and Trail in the World Equestrian Games. Maybe even some Saddleseat, etc. There's just so many equine sports not featured there yet.

Personally I'm more interested in watching the WEG than the Olympics.

However Red, I'm with you on that FEI thing....

Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.
