Need Suggestions

I've been working with a new horse and would really like to start him on barrels. The place where I'm currently boarding only has a round pen as of now. Does anyone have some suggestions on good exercised to do with him in the round pen? I've been doing reverse archs (counter-bends), doing different size circles around a barrel in the middle of the pen, roll-backs, and basically anything that keeps him moving and responding to my legs. He's getting bored though and really anticipating what we're going to be doing.

He also cross-fires (opposite lead in the back). I thought it was just one direction that he does it, nope, he switches on switch direction he does it daily. Does anyone have any suggestions to help fix this problem? I had another horse do the same thing, but all I needed to do was get him collected and do a smaller circle. It doesn't work with this guy.
