New to barrel racing

Hi... i'm new to barrel racing and am thinking about focusing my attention on that. If any of you have info about barrel racing (rules, equipment, horses, etc) it would help me a lot! Thanks so much!!

So glad someone started a thread like this! I'm new too barrel racing too! Will you do poles & flags as well? Because those aren't talked about too much on here either! Good luck with your season & learning!!

Well I don't have a horse yet, looking around for one right now though! Can you recommend any breeds to look at? I know the basics of barrel racing (main rules, what you do, etc) and have watched races at rodeos and stuff. I don't know much beyond that.

I'm thinking about doing poles too. I don't know much about those either... haha. Thanks Mocha26! Hopefully we can help each other learn about both of these races!!

I'd get a QH for barrel racing but you should go to equine now and do the advance search option, don't choose a breed or colour or gender, just put ur kocattion, age 8 for minimum age and put ur budget, and under diciplines selct barrel racing then search away

There's the poles pattern. But that's all I know as of now. I'm so glad sassy is ancient & knows all this stuff! Lol

Look for a calm, reliable stock horse to learn barrels on. At the higher levels, it's rare to see anything besides a Quarter Horse.

For breeds you can look at many breeds some arabians kick butt in barrel racing we had one named barbwire who has been winning everything haha then of course quarter horses also paints and thoroughbreds really any breed will work if they have the drive and conformation for it. As for tack get a good barrel racing saddle skinnier horn high back barrel/roping reins either will work but make sure they are good quality boots(bell and splint/medicine), breast collar
Here is what my tack looks like
My saddle

The reins
(i didnt like these but its a visual you just want one solid rein)

QH's are the most fastest. Or so said. Go to Barrel Racing at Barrel Horse World, Barrel Horses for Sale, Barrel Racing Forums, Equine Health Articles, Western Tack, and more there are many good horses for sale. If you tell me what your price range, how far you will go for it, and height also what type of rider you are( beginner, ect.) I can help you look. I love looking for horses.

Hopalongcassidy- it has a lot more to it then speed sure you can have a fast horse but that means nothing if he drops his shoulder and rams every barrel or over shoots every barrel or has no want to run the pattern. But yes quarters are prefered usually.
