Opinion on Polo Wraps for leg protection and support??
Ive seen a few barrel racers that use just polo wraps on their horses. Would it work just as good as boots. I know there's a certain way you should wrap them or they are pretty much useless. I would like some opinions on this.
They're pretty much useless no matter how you do them. You would have to tighten them enough to cut off the leg's circulation before there would be any real support. Those barrel racers are either not well educated or they are just using the polos as decoration (which is what I do xD) most likely. They MIGHT help a little if your horse tends to bump himself with his other legs sometimes or with little scratches and dinks, but that's about it. Invest in some good SMBs or something if you want real support.
I love a good polo, not the super cheap ones. I get mine custom from a friend.
They are great with a horse who needs freeing up, support very well, but you best know how to wrap them or you will cause damage. I use both boots and polos, but if I always had the time I would always use polos.
Lindsey Sears and her great horse Martha running at the National Finals Rodeo, with polo wraps.
Sherry Cervi and her awesome horse Stingray, also running at the NFR, but with sport boots.
Both of these ladies are former world champions. I'd say both are very well educated when it comes to horses.
Just goes to show that whether you choose sport boots or whether you choose polo wraps, is that it is simply personal preference.
I personally choose polo wraps. I feel they give a little bit more protection (thicker than a polo) and a little bit more support (based on the studies) than a polo wrap. I personally use Professional's Choice SMB 3 on all 4 legs along with ballistic bell boots on the front legs.
I will say that I'm not educated in the barrel world, so I'll take your guy's word. However, I really fail to see how polos can really give all that much support- but maybe I've never seen the really expensive, thick ones you guys are talking about. I've only seen them in the tack store. And since most people don't correctly wrap, I think they often do more harm than good unfortunately.
Do you guys have any articles or anything that might explain how polos are just as effective as boots that that they really do give a lot of support? Don't get me wrong, I love polos and use them sometimes to keep my mare from scratching herself up or accidently overreaching and cutting herself, but I've never looked at them as actual support braces, nor have any of the people I've ever worked with. Of course I don't tend to use boots or anything at all, unless I'm working a cow horse that I need to 'dig' into the dirt when we're on the job. Enlighten me please! :)
