I think my horse had circus toons in his head. He had no idea what a horse show was. First official show together this year, 2013. He was off pattern to each barrel, wasn't paying attention at all. Nothing we practiced is seen here. LOL

Well.... you gotta start somewhere, right?

What did you do for your warm-up? Was she listening to you in the warm-up pen?

The pattern aside, I think probably the biggest mistake I see is that you didn't MAKE her listen to you. Even when my horses are in a new environment, I don't really care if they gawk at things, but I expect them to keep their attention and respect on me.

Now it will certainly depend on the rules of the show that you attend, but if the rules allowed it, I would have made her circle that second barrel several times instead of just allowing her to "miss" it. You gave yourself a no time anyway for breaking the pattern; why not turn it into some schooling instead? (Again, if the show allows it ... some don't.)

And then as I mentioned about the warm-up, I do lots of bending, flexing, and giving exercises in the warm-up pen; especially if they are a young horse in a new place. Even though things are new and exciting around them, I want their attention on ME and listening to my cues.

Thanks so much for your input. I totally agree on making him circle the second barrel. Being this particular group is unfamiliar to us I wasn't sure about most of their rules. I was wondering if they would allow me to do that. I hate passing up an oppurtunity to teach him and/or make him listen. These shows are NBHA shows, however in our district it seems they are strict on some things and not on others. It was very hard to follow their rules when they didn't give you any info unless you asked and they didn't produce a class list beforehand. I kept running in the announcers office to ask if we were allowed to do certain things. Also, I'm new to barrel racing, I've spent half my life doing hunter/jumper and intro dressage. LOL
The warm ups were great, I was able to grab his attention well because I kept doing circles and keeping him guessing. He calmed down very well, not at first though. lol
I can post my other video of our exhibition run, which I used as an oppurtunity to introduce the arena to him and I made him go slow. He did way better I feel then the final.
