Shopping For a Barrel Horse

What do I need to look for or ask about? Currently I run at the local level on my poa mare but I'm trying to get into bigger races. I'm looking at finished barrel horses not prospects also.

Lameness History, how the horse runs, if the horse has any bad habits on the pattern, any vices such as being sour, hot, ect. Does the horse stand for the farrier, does hit clip, load, ect. How does the horse haul, ect. If you can get your hands on the previous owner I would call and ask them about the horse also.

Just be VERY careful....and just be obnoxious with questions. And if there was a quick way to drug test I would recommend that as well because I have bought a very nice horse...when she was on a 30 Day Tranq, after that wore off oh her true colors came out.

I would for sure ride the horse, haul and ride it. Take it to a race to see how it REALLY acts and runs.

Also don't just jump and buy the first horse....get a few lined up and try them all out.

I am sure I am forgetting things but the others will post.

Whats is average run time is?
When was the last doc app, dentist, chiro/massage?
What bit or bits usually used
Has is run indoors and outdoors, which does it run better in?
Shoes or barefoot?
How is it with other horses?
Does it need any maintenance? (Special feeds, shoes, injections, supplements?)
And the list goes on and on.... lol

As a side note always get a pre purchase exam from a well known vet before exchanging any money. It will save you in the long run!
