Speed Index

I just learned that my mare had a Speed Index of 52 in the one race she ran.

Is that good for barrel racing?

She is a Paint, 8 years old and been trained for barrels and poles.

Horses have been competitive in barrels with lower SI. Mine is 76... kinda slow, but his speed is soley in his take off. He has some mad impulsion. That's where a good barrel horse comes in. Not in a SI.
It all depends on the individual. If the horse is already trained for barrels, then you oughta know whether her speed is enough or not.

I have only had her a few weeks and have no idea what her speed on barrels is.

A SI is not going to tell you much in respect to doing speed events such as Barrels or pole. A SI is a racing rating showing how fast a horse was on a given track. A SI on one track will be different then one on a different track. It also will vary from distance to distance.

Speed event have more to do with rating and turning then out and out speed. You can have the fastest horse in the world but if he can not rate his speed and turn it will make no difference.
