All my barrel horses go for long trots every morning (i am home schooled) and they are legged up really well so they are able to run to their fullest and turn on a dime!

Just long trotting won't help turn on a dime :) As stated above lots of foundation training needs to go in to said horse: flexing, haveing them be able to move certain body parts while not others, shoulder ins, shoulder outs, two-tracking, lateral movements. But the best part is learning with someone who has knowledge :) also great way to have a buddy to ride with!

No just long troting wont help a horse turn on a dime but it does get the horse in shape so that when you ask it too it can turn on a dime ;)

That's a training thing too. Legging up with those long trots and getting the muscles is all fine and dandy, but you don't get that horse to use their body and ride like you're supposed to then you won't get any of that put to use.
