Video from today!

Firstly, yes I run this horse in a tie down, he's finished and he runs best when he has one he can brace on, he has no head slinging issues or any of those excuses people use for them, he could run without it no problem, but like I said, he does best when he has it to brace on.

This was his first time faster than a slow slow lope so far this year, he's not in the physical condition to be pushed yet but I decided to let him just cruise on through them today without me holding him back all the way and I think he did pretty darn good!

Cool! I wanted to share my video from our first barrel show too! I won't be able to post it until tonight though :)

The video is a bit bouncy, so it's hard to tell, but overall looked like a nice run!

The only thing I could maybe comment on was to head a little straighter (with less arc) toward your first barrel. It costs a bit of time to slowly arc in to the pocket, versus heading right for it.

I would normally agree Beau, but with this horse, when you aren't pushing him if you don't arc him he'll take your knee off on first lol. I'll get some better videos this week, maybe today. He's a cool horse but completely different than my other barrel horse. He's got some awesome turns and the only time we knock a barrel is when I ge in the way and pull it down with my knee lol

Does he respect your inside leg if you try bumping him with it to keep him off that first barrel?

Have you tried counter arcs away from the first barrel to reinforce keeping his shoulder up on the first?

Does he still have the same problem on the first barrel if you run it the opposite way?

It's fine if you need to make particular adjustments for the individual horse to run his best, but I guess the point I was just trying to make is that you won't have your fastest run if you have to arc to the first barrel, especially in a narrow, small arena. Straighter is faster. And he should always respect your inside leg. And personally, I like to try to slow lope my pattern the same way I am going to run it.

With him I hold him off and make a big wide first barrel since that is his weakest one, when we are actually running it full speed everything tightens up. I exaggerate everything at slower speeds because when you add top speed it will get smaller. He respects my leg at any speed but he also is harder to move off of it when we are running mach speed. That's why we exaggerate problem areas, when we trot the pattern I make him bend and move off that barrel so that it's a huge wide turn, and it's smaller when he lopes, and smaller when he's cruising it, and when he's running it, should be perfect. I'd rather get a check in the 2D than a 1D time with a pulled barrel He's no NFR qualifier but he sure is fun! I'll try and get some more today if the rain holds off.
