For the horse you will need:
-Breast Collar
-Roping/barrel racing/not split reins
- for some horses that tend to stop on their ankle/fetlock area on their hind legs, they may need boots.
- and the other necessities (saddle w/blanket(s), bridle w/bit)
For you:
-helmet
-long sleeve shirt
-And the pants, boots, and for some, spurs.

Hope this helped! Good luck, and have fun.

Well, the absolute necessities are obviously the saddle and bridle with barrel reins. NOT split reins, those are dangerous in the barrel arena. Some horses can ride bitless, but not all of them. Always put on splint boots or polo wraps so you don't end up laming your horse.

Now here's what I ride with: (My colors are purple)

- Breastcollar (Purple)
- Pad w/ Purple Blanket
- Purple Bridle w/ Myler Barrel Bit
- Purple Polo wraps (All four feet)
- Back Cinch

You don't really need the breastcollar and back cinch but I ride with one because when I run I have two horses who are rough and the saddle will slip without them. Granted I have Gringo and Rico too who are smooth with no slip but I still wear those because I'm too lazy to take them off, plus better safe then sorry :)

Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.

I would look into either woof boot if you are looking for just protection, or SMBs if you want support. I'd like SMBs in the barrel ring(if I ran barrels) because they protect the back of the fetlock, just in case. And I'd say bell boots too. Oh, and I'd warn against polos, they could come undone. I second a breastcollar, don't want your saddle slipping! Good luck at the show!

Yeah, the polos could be a problem but if you do them right it's fine. I just like them because they complete my purple look ;)
