Why do you barrel race? Is it a good fit for me?

I've been riding for over 10 years but need advice on barrel racing. Is this event right for me or should I try a different event. I'm really not sure.....and I wonder if I should even start at this point...I'm 19.

It is NEVER too late to start barrel racing. At 19? You have LOTS of time. I know several NFR Qualifers who got a "Late start" on the other girls.

I barrel race because its what my horses love and I have a "need for speed" that my trainer tapped into when I was young. I liked this event because it didn't require me to dress up, and I could put any color I wanted on my horse and just go have fun. For a little girl, that was the best thing ever. Sure I showed in other things as I got older (English, Reining/Reined Cowhorse, even some pleasure) but nothing ever stuck as much as barrels did. I loved training barrel horses and I loved riding barrel horses. This eventually evolved into me running in an association and then hauling to rodeos.

If you want to try it, then try it! It can't hurt. I know a lot of girls who ride English but come down to the association and run my horses for me just because its a fun thing to do to get away from the high level show world. (And I like it 'cause I get my colts seasoned low-level for free ) You don't have to be competitive right away, you can decide after you've ran a couple times. If you really love it, you'll advance your way through.

Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.

Sometimes it takes some time for people to see the post. If you have questions, you can definitely ask me, or post in this same forum. Everyone is very willing to help.

OT but...I just have to say that I have never met another Caiti before. =0

I love barrel racing, there is something great about feeling the power of a horse charging off or sitting down for a turn. Its a great adrenaline rush!

Want to know the story? From The Start? It is a work in progress.
The $25 horse I didn't want.

I started when I was about 26, whereas most of the girls at my barn had been doing it since they were little girls. It's never too late, you just have to have some humility, and be okay with having some not-so-great times at first. If you're not having fun, there's no point, so just don't be too hard on yourself.

Thank y'all so much for the advice and support! :) I think I will try it and see how it goes I think I'll try getting a seasoned horse first nothing to fancy maybe 2d/3d and I have a friend lined up to start teaching me. Sound like a good plan? I'm a pretty confident rider and I'm doin it for fun...for right now anyways :)
