Would my gelding make a good barrel horse?

I've been working him at a trot on the pattern for about three months now and he has really gotten good. Just trot up to the pocket, barrel tip the rein and say "easy" and he whips around it like a bullet. He is tall, 16.1, which is big for a barrel horse, I know, and he is kinda lanky, but he can cover the ground and get around turns just as well as my 14.3 full blood Quarter horse. Here is a video of my friend running him, don't critique her, she is a really good rider but my stirrups were too short for her, and blah blah blah:P
I'd also like to try poles on him:) what do you think?
I will try to post some pictures of him when I get on my own computer:P

Im no expert, but I think he could be a nice barrel horse if he liked it, the best horses are the nes who put their heart into it, not the ones bred for it.
And again, im not an expert, but im pretty sure your not supposed to run those barrels on grass? Couldnt it hurt the horse or pull a tendon or something?

He is deffinitly quick on his feet :) I wouldnt do more then a trot for barrel racing on that ground though. I would deffinitly start him slow, and see how is turns are and go from there. He looks like he's very nice and has alot of energy. Looks like he is safe and you could accomplish alot on him.

Dont worry about him being tall. My barrel horse is 16.2hh. And if you've ever noticed brittany pozzi horse stitch it very tall also. When me and my tall boy started on barrel he didn't know how to use them long lanky think under his body (legs) :)
But I started running him in fields a lot, and it help him pick up speed.

Also when I start horses on the pattern I don't do more then a trot. Once a week I make lope them I never run them unless im at a race. I think it help get them under control better.

He looks like he'd enjoy barrels from what I can see. Have fun!

I would wear a helmet if you're going to be doing barrels on grass. Two days ago my horse slipped doing a pattern (on the home stretch, not even on a turn) and she fell on her knees, I flew off, hit my head, and was unconcious for 2 minutes. When I woke I couldn't remember anything....and I had a helmet on! I know it's a matter of personal opinion but that's just my advice.

Eheh thanks guys!!! And I never lope in my pasture unless its a straight line or a big circle. My ground is too hard and grassy to try loping the pattern!! I save that for when I go to my local arena.

Its hard to find horses that know how to run these days but he has figured it out. He really stretches himself out and drops his head which helps him cover some serious ground. He looks good. Just make sure you take it slow and preserve his brain the best you can, that's the best thing I can tell anyone who is putting a pattern on a horse. Good Luck with him! (=
