99 Tacoma towrig?

So I have a 99 Tacoma V6 with a supercharger on it and I would love to use it to tow my horse trailer. I have a little 70s 2 horse Miley and my mare is about 950 lbs. The weigh about 1500 pounds beneath my trucks tow capacity and both the trailer and truck have electric brakes. I only plan to use it around town so I can't see a reason why I can't use it, but every yota guy tells me you can't tow with it. Any one else tow with older Tacoma and have any problems?

Well you definetly arnt lacking horsepower, Not sure what the torque ratings are. The toyotas like yours I have seen pulling horse trailers looked like the rear suspension was over loaded, IE its rear bumper was very low. This creates a dangerous steering problem, as the front can loose traction. Hook it up and see how level your truck sits. Might need to add a spring or some other rearend spring upgrade. Load hors on one side put your tack towards the rear of the other. Make sure your trailer brakes work, keep the speed down and drive like you are driving on ice. I wouldnt have any issues with short distance local towing with one horse. The manufacturer diesnt seem to think its a problem either.

I did notice the truck does looks slightly overloaded in the rear, but the truck seemed just fine once we got moving-the trailer was empty and it was rainy and windy. There's a guy in town who tows his Featherlite with 2 horses in it in his little 4cyl Tacoma-it sits scary low!

The problem with that scarey low in the back is it is taking weight off the front, your steering gets real squirrelly. Found that out loading alot of wood inthe back of a smaller truck, probably doesnt help your braking any either. Id make real sure your trailer brakes are working well and really dial up the setting. Your truck wont have alot of weight to stop things. Probably not the best option but if its what you got its what you got.

Yeah its not so much the towing as the stopping that concerns me lol. We live in a super flat area so I don't have any huge hills to worry about. I just put new brakes on the trailer so I know it has good brakes. It tows great empty but I know it will be a different story with a horse moving around in it! Its also a stick shift, which I've been told is bad for towing but I honestly can't make the brain switch to an automatic.

lol both statements are false

I wondered how true that was... I think it's just the Toyota mentality here-that they're for off-roading not towing lol.

People have not been taught how to properly use a stick shift so think you can't tow with them, they are wrong. There's only a couple of automatic transmissions I would even consider towing with.

Next person who tells you stick shifts are no good to tow with, ask them how many semi's have automatic transmissions.

Lol ok. So using my little 5spd Tacoma for a tow rig is doable... I just have to be careful not overload it (I have no need to tow more than one horse) and be careful with the stopping even with the trailer brakes. I'll look into how much its costs to do fix up the rear end so it doesn't ride as low. Its needs work done anyway so I might as well have them fix it in a way that works better for what I want to use it for :)

Hmmm... I tow my two horse with my manual transmission Toyota Tacoma. So long as you drive smart, stay under the tow capacity and make sure your load is balanced (as previously mentioned, may need airbags or a special hitch to level) you should do fine. Gas milage may suck, but if you're not hauling far or often, that doesn't matter as much.
