Muffler question for the serious car folks

I recently blew a baffle in one of the cheap econo mufflers on my tow rig. Which is a 1984 Chevy c30 powered by a 454 auto. Since, mileage fell off a bit and I'm sure it's restricting flow. Gotta change both mufflers.

Onto my question, what free flowing mufflers have you had success with? Oh, my actual problem is it MUST BE QUIET. I pull my stock trailer with this truck and I Know 2 chamber flowmasters would be brutal in the trailer. I've never needed a quiet free flowing muffler before. Our area doesn't do emissions or vehicle inspections so anything goes. Where as I know in some areas, even race tracks have noise restrictions.

I've read up a lot, but prefer first hand knowledge when available. So if anyone's had to deal with this challenge, share your experience. Even if its a fail.

I don't think theyre quiet as stock like it says, but theyre not loud at all. Nowhere near as loud as half the diesels haulin horses

I'll definitely look into those. The truck has true duals with side turnouts. I'm considering dumping the exhaust in front of the tires when I change the mufflers. Mostly so I can mud flaps on it, as the pipes currently prevent mud flaps being mounted in a position to be effective. I'm hoping the shorter pipes won't raise the volume much. I'm not really looking for a stock whisper quiet sound so much as a comfortable sound especially at cruising speed. I'm thinking I may add an h-pipe when I do it also, to kinda mellow it out a lil. I appreciate the input and feel free to add any other thoughts. I don't tend to think this far ahead, usually it's a wild hair decision. This I feel warrants a lil thought.

Get the long guard that's attached under the bumper. You more commonly see these with big travel trailers. They really reduce the dust on secondary roads.

True duals and no flowmasters allowed?



Why don't you just get different tips so that the pipe points straight out the back?
Shorter pipes are closer to the headers, lol. Its going to be louder..

That's an option as well. But my main concern with the mud flaps is to keep mud and snow from packing up under the bed. I've already had ice rip the wiring out of the left tail light. The truck has a 12' flatbed on it, guess I shoulda mentioned that earlier. My oversight.

Flowmasters aren't exactly ruled out, if I can find a quiet set, which I haven't heard many good thing about their quieter options. Straight out isn't an option at all, trying to keep the noise away from the trailer. My thinking on going in front of the wheels is, it's further away from the trailer, shouldn't resonate in the trailer as bad even if its a lil louder.

The hubby has true duals and no mufflers at all.. we pulled a 16' stock trailer and a 2 horse straight load/cattle trailer- even had first timers in the trailer and they werent too baffled.. no pun intended.. lol.

Seems like itd be extra loud but if its got sheet metal in front of the mangers- the sound breaks around it.. even with a big block engine.. why do I know that?.. my friend and I refused to ride in her mommas truck as kids.

I've pulled trailers with rear exit exhaust, I got sick of the echo/resonance in the cab. In an open stock trailer I'm sure it be a less then stellar racket. Would they get over it? Sure, but it'd still drive me bonkers hauling with the slider window open.

Flowmaster 70 has good flow and is real quiet. Nobody likes them because most all flowmaster people want super loud


Cherry Bomb Turbo and Elite are pretty quiet too

I think either of the 3 would be good on a 454, the flowmaster 70 would be the best, and that's saying a lot, because I hate the loud flowmasters

Im running a Cherry Bomb Vortex on a 89 Camaro, with no cat, and its actually real mellow, only really hear it when you lay into it

Got a form of a glass pack (not quite as straight through as the original smittys) on my Dodge that is surprisingly no where near as loud as my old 454 with duals and true glass packs.
