    I second the jeep. Even though I do not consider the 4 door wrangler a real jeep, they are good for families and carrying stuff.

    If you don't want a super new car, might want to look into a Jeep Cherokee, the last year they made them was 01 though. They carry 5 people, have tons of cargo space, and the straight 6 goes forever, the 94 I had before my current one made it to 300k, and the 99 I have right now just turned over 170k, and I plan on getting at least another 100k out of it.

    I felt the exact same way toward the 4-door... till I got one! I really do like it now. It has a lot more space, and can do everything a 2-door can. There is more cargo room in my Wrangler than a Cherokee, and the seats fold down and can be taken out. Plus.... soft top what what!

    I was promptly quieted on the "four doors aren't real Jeeps" front

    I don't know if I will ever be a fan. I look at a lot of the things Chrysler has done to jeep and cringe though.

    Cherokee's seats can fold down too, and mine are all fully removable...

    You can not go wrong with the Toyota's. I work on cars for a living and I have to say that you would be hard-pressed to beat their SUV's or trucks. You can get better gas mileage, but overall, based on longevity, cost of ownership, ease of maintenance, durability, etc., nothing beats them.

    My boyfriend is a car salesman, so he knows all the ins and outs of vehicles.

    His suggestion:

    Ford Escape - small SUV, seats five, 80 cu. Ft. Of storage with seats folded down, 24-27 mpg highway; a 2004-2005 model with 50-60k miles should run you about $8,500 he says.

    I really like the escape hybrid, plus you will get a tax credit if you buy a new one. Are you going to do the cash for clunkers program?

    I second the Subaru. They are hardy little vehicles and get great gas mileage.
