Okay so this 3 and 4th there is a cutting show and me and my mom are going with my QH that was on a ranch for 9 years, his parents were cutters and he was used on teh ranch but hasnt been near cows in 4 to 5 years. and i wanted to know how you do it? what to do? and anything i should know before hand? i would like to do 2 to 4 maybe more every year so he has a job.
harley, there are are 100 rules and 100 things you need to react to in cutting.it's not an event that a horse can do a couple times a year and be very responsive to it.
I don't recommend trying to show a horse who may have been a "ranch horse" at one time. Cutting horses require pretty specialized training. However, there will be a rookie class and $1,000 novice classes at that show. Those classes are not NCHA sanctioned and would be the cheapest for you.
Expect this show to be very busy! They will likely run two show pens because the awards banquet is Saturday night.
If you decide not to show, you are still more than welcome to come and watch. This is one of the best facilities I have ever been to (and I've shown in many different places west of the Mississippi). You will enjoy watching. Plus there are always horses for sale that you might even be able to try out!
Price doesn't matter for us. I've been there many times also for barrels. This is a cutting horse and I'm more into barrles then anything I just bought 2 horses to start barrles and not looking for any more horses. Posted via Mobile Device
Tie-downs & rope reins are not allowed; certain bits are also not allowed. The dress code is enforced because the association can be fined for not doing so (this means western attire & a hat in the loping and show pens and NO hoodies) Posted via Mobile Device
Started as a youth in 1996, so not as much as I would like with school & college & grad school. It's much harder to get to shows up here with the seasons & distance, and they certainly don't have near the added money that's available in the heart of cutting country. But, it's still awesome and I'll cut until I can't ride anymore (then I'll spectate, lol!) Posted via Mobile Device
I have never tried 2 man sorting. I have never heard of one being put on up here either.
I Team penned back in the day though. In addition to jackpots, we qualified several horses for AQHA world, but never went. Team penning was ruined up here by some crooked guys and the association essentially bankrupted & dissolved.
I will probably always choose cutting over team penning or team sorting. I think penning can be overly stressful for the stock (which makes it harder to rent stock) and there are so many people who blow up great horses by over-using them. Like any of the speed events, the over enthusiastic novice who thinks they know it all can really make a person not want to be there to witness the inevitable wreck.
There are not many reined cow horse or working cow horse events either. Tons of rodeos or ranch rodeos though. They're popular because entry fees are relatively low, alcohol is allowed, and people can share a ride to a close arena.
The show at Red Horse on the 3rd & 4th will be a 700 mile round trip for me, and that is the closest MN show. I don't show much in the ND association because they tend to be more "rustic" with their events. Posted via Mobile Device
2 man sorting is in a 60 ft round pen so it's not as stressful as penning, and i find it to be the closest thing to cutting.if you get a chance, look up the www.rsnc.us website and they have under calender where and when the shows are.
Bought him to do barrles he never liked doing barrles so I took him out of that and bought some to be barrle horses. He's also a very good trail horse, I can put kids on him, and just good all around. Posted via Mobile Device
Cutting is NOT something a horse can just pick up, I don't care how much ranch work he used to do. Ranch work isn't cutting...Cutting is an art and it takes years and years to train and season a successful cutting horse. And years upon years to become a successful rider..If you don't know what you're doing and haven't had that first hand experience you are walking into a whole new world, blindfolded, and no idea what to expect. IMHO, cutting is one of THEhardest western disciplines and it's not just for a beginner to jump into a expect to do well without proper lessons with a trainer and a finished horse to teach them...Your horse would be better suited to team penning or sorting, like mentioned above.. I'm not trying to be a downer but I'm just saying if you don't even know the rules and ways of the cutting world, you're likely to mess up and injure yourself and/or your horse..
Harleywood - are you still going? We are for sure going now that the storm system seems to have been a little less severe than expected and the roads will be ok. I'm hauling horses down early Friday morning to work them on fresh cattle. You may want to consider going there early on Friday and getting a practice in.
If so, I would be happy to meet you and may introduce you to some people who are far better cutters than I am. Posted via Mobile Device
Why not just go to try it? If it's a disaster then you know what to do next time!
I'm not a western person, I've only barrel raced a couple times and I don't count that. But I wouldn't tell someone they can't event or do dressage or show jump because it "takes many years of skill" every discipline does, and yeah we may not be rockstars at it but at least go try it! Hard or not, I wouldn't discourage someone like that.
I bet it is really hard, and maybe you should do some smaller stuff beforehand that you can really get good at, and then go on to fry the bigger fish. But at least go to the event!
I really think you should go experience it. Even if you just bring your horse over and watch it from the sidelines, that's great! You can see what they're doing, maybe meet a trainer there or someone that can help you and your horse go for it!
Ive been thinking about going at 8ish that day and showing and going around asking people for advise and such, and doing it to see how i do and have them watch if they can, and tell me what i did wrong, what i did right and all that.
im mainly a gamer, but i ride my friends moms horse in derssage (she loves how i look and ride in english and tought me how to jump, and derssage) and i rode a horse she got for herself, that she didnt ride at all for years. and my friend tought me halter and WP, show trail. so i know a little about a lot of showing stuff. but not much about rodeo and cow stuff and would like to learn to see what i like best to get into.
BTW if i do come and maybe show what kind of shirt? and do i need a hat? my mom likes me wearing a helmet when i ride this guy.
Everyone has to start somewhere. You can always just watch too.
As far as clothes...You must be wearing western attire at all times in the arena if you are on a horse. This includes jeans, boots, a western shirt (must have collar, cuffs and buttons or snaps completely down the front) and a hat.
I am not sure if youth are allowed to wear a helmet, you would have to have that approved by show management and the judge.
For legal dress & some horse equipment rules, read page 120-121 of the PDF link I posted. That section is Judging Rule 16.
I don't know how far away you live, but I would plan to be on the grounds by noon as they will start the second show pen sometime between 12 & 2pm. When they do that, they will sometimes run lower classes that don't require video, etc, so the classes you are eligible to show in might go early. You should plan for enough time to have your horse loped down.
I should be there no later than 3pm tomorrow. Posted via Mobile Device
Well I called 3 weeks ago and she said show starts at 8 but my class would be at 10ish. I live and hour to hour and half away. And have school tomorrow, so ill be coming saterday if I do because no one would be there for my other horses at my house if I left tomorrow. Posted via Mobile Device
