Smart Chic Olena Passes

I just heard through the grapevine that Smart Chic Olena passed away yesterday. I didn't think he was quite that old (1985) I imagine that Quarter Horse News or some other outlet will pick up the story soon and be able to provide more details.

I remember reading about all of his cutting, reining and other cow-horses successes in magazines when I was a kid and so wanting to get into the sport. I also remember drooling over his breyer.

Seems like we have lost quite a few legends in the last year or so.

Wow :( We have lost so many horses this year. Such a shame. At least he lived a good long life. 27 I think that would make him?

I have said what I have said. I have not said what I have not said.

Actually passed up the opportunity to buy 2 different mares sired by him at the sons and daughters sale in Billings Montana 2-3 years ago. Never thought they would go in my price range so we never even had a look at them or do any research so we passed on them.

Truly a great horse and a great sire with lots of offspring to prove it. The industry lost another great one.

This is so sad to hear..and so true, the horse world has lost great horses the past few months. I'm sure more information will be released later but I can't find much as of now.

NRHA
"We have received notice that Smart Chic Olena has passed away due to natural causes.

The 2004 NRHA Hall of Fame inductee and NRHA Five Million Dollar Sire will be greatly missed by the reining horse industry.

We send our condolences to all of those involved in his show pen and stallion successes.

The 1985 stallion was the 1993 Open Reserve World Championship under Craig Johnson, in addition to garnering Gold and Silver Certificates with the Association.

In AQHA competition, Smart Chic Olena earned World Champion honors in both Senior Reining and Cutting."

Quarter Horse News posted this on their Facebook about half an hour ago.

The late, great Smart Chic Olena, rest in peace. According to owner Bill Richardson, the 1985 stallion who has offspring earnings topping $10 million in the reining, reined cow horse and cutting arenas, spent his final months grazing peacefully in the pasture next to his longtime mare friend, Brooksinic. Smart Chic Olena was euthanized on June 24.
