Team Penning?

I haven't posted too much on here, but I'll give you some back round on me and my horse.

In late December I bought a well broke QH gelding. His old owner did team penning and roping events with him. I have just done ring work, and trying to get started doing team penning and ranch sorting.

Right now I am started to take lessons again(first ones Friday), to work on my seat and a few minor issues.

I'm just looking for info on both team penning and ranch sorting and how to get started in it. I have found several barns that do practices but I don't want to show up and make a fool of myself.

I found a local cow horse trainer too, I thought it might be worth it to call him and see if he offered instruction.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Sorting and penning are what I live to do. The biggest thing is learbing to read your cattle. Know which ones you need to be right on, and which ones need worked from the distance. Behind the shoulder pushes a cow, in front of the shoulder turns them. That's a good start. It is the funnest thing in the world.

Penning and sorting can be a lot of fun. I compete just about every weekend year round. Don't worry about making a fool of yourself...all of us started somewhere and there is nothing wrong with going to a practice and learning.
Best way I know to learn how to handle cattle is move them around on foot.

This is SUCH a fun event. I'm a barrel racer at heart, but I grew up with reined cowhorses. I LOVE team penning and sorting, it's such a blast! Even if you aren't so good now, it only comes with practice! I still consistently make a fool out of myself because even though I was good when I was only riding cowhorses, I now have barrel horses and baby horses who aren't big on the whole "Chase cow" idea

Everyone starts somewhere, and I guess it wouldn't hurt going to a practice and seeing what it's like, one of my biggest issues is I don't have any partners to bring.

Another question, any specific type of saddle do you need?

I have an old Simco I have been using, I have a saddle to sell, and then I can get a more appropriate saddle and one that actually fits Cash.

Most parctices you go to,just watch a little and see who you want to ride with.as far as saddles,most people use cutting saddles or ranch cutters.

Most people in my area are greatabout riding and helping beginners. Honestly, if you just laearning, if you find a rider who knows what they are doin, they are the best to ride with to learn. Because they can guide you. I use a team penning saddle made by circle y. I love it. It also has a slick seat instead of suede. And I don't think id ever ride in a suede seat again. I love the freedom I have in a slick seat.

I just hope the people are like that here too. I am going to haul down Friday night and learn what it's about, I'm going to bring a friend that's interested too, but she's not bringing her horse. I just have to sell one of my saddles, and I will be able to buy one more suited for this.
