What you described is sorting. Penning actually has 3 riders and 30 cows.

Well if you consider breaking out of his field to hang in a field with cattle I would say he is cowy lol.. but I have never used him for anything like that.

Where can I find a rule book on the cutting and team sorting??

Here are some links to some of the rules
    NCHA Rule Book
    Rules
    RSNC

It does take lots of training to get a horse to the levels shown in the videos. But it is also easier to get into penning and sorting as there are practices available that cater to all levels of horses and riders.

Sorting has 2 riders and anywhere form 10-12 cows #0-9 with a few in there that don't have numbers and have to stay on that side they are on. They are in a area that looks like 2 round pens put to gether with a open area between them. You have to take the cows in the other pen in order.

I just put the first one up that I found. Stampede is on my mind, just got the invoice for my entries this year.
I don't wanna say names but he won the 10 class at Stampede last year.

How many teams are you on?

Well that narrowed it down. Lol
I am on six possibly seven teams. 10 and 7 class. With the entry fees as high as they are I had to be careful how many I entered up on. This year the 10 class has around three hundred teams and only the top 20 after two runs ride at the Saddledome....gonna take some hard riding through the qualifiers as usual. And they are going to be long days. Are you coming south to watch?
Plus we may be doing Ponoka Stampede the week before, penning and sorting, and we also have two two day pennings still this month.

I was going to write a thread about cutting then I saw this one! I've always liked cutting I have no idea how it is done, I would fall off and I will probably never do it but I still like it!

So dumb question.. I know ALL horse's having training and video's I watch are usually world champions.. But at that level ( heres the dumb one ) do the horses do everything?? I see the riders go into the cows bring one out exc. But once the cow is head on with the horse it just looks like the horse knows his job and does it.

I sound like every person in the world who says " you just sit on the horse and they do the work"

Even in the lower classes you put your hand down. But most of the time those horse has had alot of training.
And when you hear you just sit and let the horse work that is BS. You have to use you legs, and you have to sit the stops. And much more.

Depends on what level you are showing at you are aloud to ride 2 handed in a snaffle on young horses. I showed 2 handed growing up and most ranch cutting you can 2 hand as well.
