This is Kate, and Kate with Mandy, my senior QH mare. Funny, Kate looks small in both of these pictures. She's about 16.1

Spotted Draft/Paint cross owner

Ok, finally got how to post a picture. She is a spotted draft/paint cross. Sire was a black and white spotted draft 17hh and mother was a buckskin tobiano paint 15.2hh. She is a coming three year old. She stands 14hh at the withers. How do I know, besides simply waiting, to know if she will take after the draft side and grow much slower or the paint side and then not grow to much taller? She is a little bit fugly at the moment and I am aware that to some she is a horse that won't amount to much more than a trail horse....which is, in fact perfect for me. She is wonderful and I love her the way she is. It has just been interesting trying to figure out what in the world she will end up looking like!

Looks like she's going to take after the paint side, Oldhorselady. My Percheron/paint is a coming 3yo (in May) whose sire was a 15.1hh APHA and his dam was a 17hh Percheron. Aires is already 16hh at the withers and around 16.2hh at the butt.

If I were you, I'd string test her. I believe if you measure from the front of her fetlock to her knee, the number you get in inches is the number of hands they'll end up (so if she measures 15", she'll be 15hh). When I did this on Aires, it showed he'd be right around 17-17.1hh. Also, I can't remember what thread it was in, but someone posted a table about how much of their mature height a horse has at any given age. I believe at 3-years-old, they have something like 98% of their adult height.

Do not tell me I can't...because I will show you that I can.

spotted draft cross owner

Thanks Draftyairesmum. I string tested her to 15hh.....I was hoping for 14.2hh....but am happy with how she is since she seems to be stout...would you agree on stout? I read the stuff about by 3 that horses have most of their height, however, was just thinking since she was part draft there was hope! I'll take her for what she is though.

Yes, I'd say she's stout. She's a good-looking girl, even in her winter woolies. Love the patch of white in her mane.

My BO swore up and down that Aires probably wouldn't reach 16hh when I bought him last May (he was 15hh then). Yeah, I had Aires standing next to my friend's 15.3hh arab gelding the other day and the BO couldn't believe that Aires is actually taller than CJ now. lol

Oh, there is hope? I guess only time will tell. Interesting to see her color after she sheds. She definately has draft personality. So very friendly. Always wanting to be around humans. I will have to post pictures to compare this summer. Thanks for your input!

My draft cross is a paint/perch but he definitely takes after the perch side, we think there's more than 1/2 draft in there. He was around 16.3 at three but has continued to grow, had his last growth spurt at 6 1/2 so I hope he's finally done at 7..... ended up 17.3+, wears a 64" english girth and a 90" blanket..!!
