I'm thinking about making my next horse a draft. However, I have only ever ridden one breed, a Percheron. Needless to say I fell in love. I want to know what types of experiences people have had with different draft breeds. I have heard horror stories, just like other breeds though. How do they vary? I know it is a general question but feel free to take off with it. Pictures of your drafts would be nice too!
Most are in my Barn here. I have a soft spot for Belgians but have worked with many of the draft breeds. Love them all. As you mentioned alternative styles you may want to pull up the thread on Texas Thunder, the Percheron team that Priefert has.
I own a Belgium and just trail ride ,he is like any other horse I have ridden, draft horse are like any others just bigger ( but they do not know it so do not tell them )
My boy is a Shire/Thoroughbred cross. I think they're a great cross, quite versatile and not so heavy as a full draft - it allows for us to do a little more, as far as jumping, etc.
He's not too tall - 15.3 - but pretty stocky so even though I'm tall we look proportional together
Of course, I think any cross would be a good choice, depending on what you want to do with it.
