Hey, Everyone, I am new to this forum. I just bought my first ever draft horse on Friday, she comes home in two weeks! She is a two year old Belgian filly. I plan on using her for pleasure riding, mainly trails, etc. Her name is Honeysuckle Storm aka Honey. I am so excited! She seems kinda thin to me but I will take care of that in no time!

First: She is gorgeous! Love her! You are going to have so much fun raising and training her! I'm doing it too, I've had Sam since he was born, and he's now 2. Best experience in the world! Enjoy her and take things slow, drafts are slow to mature!

Second: She is a bit underweight. Worming her and feeding her a good quality hay, and a high fat/low starch/high protein feed will fix that! (High fat/low starch cause she's a draft, and the high protein cause she's growing)

Here's a pic of my husbands 18 yrs old Belgian. He trail rides with him. I love this thread because my Mustang is 17.2 hands tall so he looks more at home with the big boys.

He's a full, branded BLM Mustang. He came from a small herd in Utah where best "guesstimates" are that the herd has Andalusian bloodlines among others. I've got more pics of him in an album (including one next to a "normal" sized Quarter Horse) if you want to check him out. He was such a spooky goof ball until we put him in the pen with hubbys old Belgian and now he's so calm. That draft gentleness must have rubbed off!!

Here is my baby, Sam... He is a 2 year old Belgian/Clydesdale cross... Mostly Belgian (3/4 Belgian, 1/4 Clydesdale)...He's is currently 16.2 and when last weighed, I was shocked to see him at 1600lbs already ... I really hope I measured him wrong and that he's closer to 1400lb! He is a tank though and everyone tells me how big he is, although I still think he's my baby. I've had him since the day he was born, he's a heart-horse and will be with me til he dies!

We are going to lightly start some under saddle work this summer, just walking; learning to go forward, stop, turn, and back, hopefully respond to some seat and leg since we are also bitless!

Sam as a baby (you can see his half clyde dam in the background)

First winter as a weanling

Sam as a yearling

Sam this past winter (18 months old)

First time I sat on him this past May...

And my handsom young man, now... He's growing up to be quite to presentable gentleman

Incase you didn't notice, I'm only slightly in love with my horse

This is my 13 year old Percheron, Captain. He was originally an Amish plow horse who had likely been starved for some time before being sent to auction. He was in the 'meat pen' at the auction and my instructor ended up paying somewhere around $50 for him.

You can read more about his story (and mine) here.
