Well, I know we already have a Drafts Under Saddle thread, and a Half Draft thread, but we are always getting new people, and not everyone rides their Drafts. So, I thought it'd be nice to have a thread to just show off our Drafts.
Be sure to include name, age, breed, and what you do with them.

This is Sam, he's a 2y/o Belgian and I've had him since the day he was born... He's a bit of a brick powerhouse....

This is Ben. He's my newest addition. He is 1.5y/o and the biggest sweetheart ever. He's a bit scrawny for my liking, but good hay and regular feeding will solve that quick :)

And here they are together.

I plan to train both of them under saddle for trail riding. I'd love to dabble in dressage and jumping with them. Mainly, I plan to use them under harness as a team for hayrides, sleighrides, weddings, logging, farming...

Oops! Got so excited about the pictures that I forgot the info...

First horse is a 17 year old percheron Mare...Belle 'Big Mamma'. She trail rides and drives. She is just plian wonderful.

Second horse is a 3 year old spotted draft/paint cross named Snickers. She has just been started under saddle with light trail riding and ring work. She is just plain silly.

Draftyairesmom.....you forgot info too!...on your gelding who could be Snickers brother!

Oops. lol

Ummmm...

This is Aires. He's my 16hh 3-year-old Percheron/paint cross gelding. He was started (lightly) under saddle last summer. He's my go-to guy for trails and is good in the arena as well. Eventually, we're going to event.

Thanks! He's my baby! He's looking soooooooo good all sleeked out in his summer coat. Looking more like a horse now and less like a baby.

Can't wait to get the new mare and for them to meet. Should be interesting since they're about the same size and sound like they're about the same temperament.

I feel like I show Dozer off too much.. Oh well!

This is my guy, Dozer. He is 18.2hh and about 8 years old. I've had him for around three years and have used him for mostly trail. He is good in the arena and I hope to one day get him into low level jumping. We think he is a mix of perch and paint, but not sure. He is a PMU.

Draftyairesmom....I didn't realize that our two horses are the exact same age too....but 8 inch difference....so funny to see how they mature.
Aires is definitely taking after his Percheron dam, who was about 18hh. But he got his daddy's paint genes for sure. His sire was only 15.1hh. Aires passed him in height just after he turned two.

LOVING this thread. All the beasties are so beautiful!
Though I do not have any drafts of my own, I would love to breed them some day. Perhaps Shires? But I love all the big breeds so much.

HA, I also want to breed ponies. I'll have fields full of big ol' drafties along side wee little ponies :D

@OldHorseLady -- you're very brave to be around those big old hooves in flipflops!

I would love to have a whole menagerie myself.....if I only could.

DraftyAiresMom! Where did you get your aussie saddle and how much was it!? I want to buy one for Sam since he's 2, I want to start some light riding this summer!

I got my saddle at a local tack consignment shop. Paid $125 for it. It's in beautiful condition, is really well-made, was fully fitted out (except stirrups) and couldn't be more comfortable. I do need to replace my leathers because they're a smidge too long, and I'd like to rerig it Aussie-style (it's rigged western right now and is a pain), but overall I couldn't be happier with it.

Oh, and it's really lightweight, which is a huge plus cuz I have a bad shoulder.

Sure looks like a full Percheron to me. I love her colouring too. It brought back many fond memories of Vaux Brewery in Sunderland UK who used gray Percherons like yours to pull their beer wagons. They were the reason I got into Heavy Horses. Their horses were absolutely huge. Will try and get a picture to post for you...Found one

This is "Blue Belle" - a retired Mounted Unit police horse, and full Percheron. I love her oddles! She stands 16.2 withers, and she has a very shapely bum, and is quite curvy too!

My son's Bryan wedding, Belle looks like a unicorn! And Madi looks like a fairy princess!

This is my Perchx Shiloh. I use her mostly for rodeo drill team, trail riding, and parades. Shes 17.2 and 6 years old. Love her to death!

This is my big dumby -erm- I mean, American Cream. Except he came out the wrong color. He's still kinda cute, though.

He is an absolute blockhead. I must really like him though, since I've had him for 7 years.

Introduce your Drafties

Love this thread!!!
Please will someone start up some US show classes for cobs/mini drafts like the UK show cob classes where they are shown hogged/roached with clipped legs - a braided mane or shorter would be OK but these extra long manes/tails and feather aren't always practical and our girl is now redundant. If we left her legs unclipped they would grow thick feather. We bought our mini-clyde (as far as we know she is a clydesdale x arabian) as a 4 year old from a Brightwells sale in the UK, she was probably only 3 as just broke and ridden lightly on. She was for our then 14 year old son as a replacement for his outgrown pony. She is quite a forward going ride, never needs more than a gentle nudge and keeps going at that pace until asked for something else. She is more likely to spook at an imaginary gremlin than at a huge noisy truck, we've never had to 'desensitise' her to anything as she happily accepts anything you throw at her. She is bossy if she gets the chance, will round up her field buddies like a sheepdog and adores attention - can be a bit demanding of it when the farrier or vet come!!! In 2007 she and our two other horses left the UK by trailer, boat, plane and trailer (and a spell in quarantine) to eventually arrive totally unflustered in their new home in the US. Our long haired (just a phase) 5ft son is now 6ft and much heavier, she still carries him happily and her little face lights up when he comes home from college.

Some of you might know me from another forum I chat on. I kept my same username so there is no confusion if it is me or not. I wanted to join another forum that had something a little different. So here I am. Sorry if you already know me, I'll post this for those who do not. :D

I raise, breed, and train Registered Percheron draft horses in Michigan. I am breeding horses that I am trying to stay true to some of the original characteristics that made the Percheron great. All my mares stand under 17hh. I also document and study blue roan, and bay Percherons. Blue roan is very rare in the Percheron draft, but bay which is even more so, is on the verge of extinction. 16 breeding age and sound horses remain. I am hoping to make a difference there as well.

I own a blue roan Percheron stallion by the name of Ace. I also own 4 mares; Wixi, Indi, Lore, and Meg. 2 blacks, 1 blue roan/grey, and 1 bay mare. Next year will be my first breeding season with Ace as I just purchased him at the beginning of this year.

Glad to be here, and hope to keep posting.

This is Ace

(put his bow on crooked, whoops.)

And these are my girls. First Wixom

Indi

Lorelei

and last but not least, Meg

I'm in love with all of your horses and especially in love with the fact that you are staying true to the origional breed characteristics and not following the show/hitch scene! Love that they are all under 17hh!!! Short and stocky is totally the way to go! I'd rather brag about what a brick powerhouse my horse is than brag about how tall they are! Kudos!
