R.I.P. my beloved Rusty

I lost my wonderful 'Rusters' in 1990 at the too-young age of 24.

It never dawned on me then that he might have been a draft cross. This thread prompted me to post a few pics and see what others thought. Height was around 15-ish. I always referred to him as my red roan 'Heinz 57', lol. Check out the feathers, thick legs and heiney. Kinda broad chest too.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps a Belgian/QH cross? He was lovely. So sorry that you lost him.

Aww thanks. I miss him so much. I still use his saddle for my horse Vegas. It's like being with my old friend again.

Wow...Belgian cross! I checked a number of images, and it seems to me that that's what he was. And I think of the many times I trimmed those lovely feathers and that mane & tail, and how fast they all grew. And I wondered why other horses I was around weren't like that, lol. Ah well, I was in my teens then when I got him at age 4, what did I know?

Love all these beautiful crosses on this thread!

Here's my draft cross Suri. She is a 16.1hh Thoroughbred/quarter horse/Clydesdale cross, not really sure of the percentages though. She is out of a PMU mare (although luckily not born on a PMU farm) She is my eventing prospect and loves to jump! Somehow I seem to have a complete lack of good riding pictures!! Anyway, here she is :)

This is my kind of thread! I love half-drafts, have 2 and if all goes well, will have a 3rd in March. My first is a 9yo perch/arab cross that I got as a pmu rescue weanling.

My other is a 3yo pregnant percheron/qh, bred to a percheron/qh sire that I got 2 days ago!

Is the breeding 100% sure as she looks so like a Clydesdale Cross - the head and legs are very Clydesdale. Percheron usualy have little or no feather

I also noticed she was more heavily feathered than my other perch x, and see why you may wonder if clyde x, but I am pretty sure she is perch x. I can only rely upon the information that was given to me by the seller, but I have no reason to doubt what I was told. He said he got her from his neighbor who is primarily a purebred percheron breeder/trainer/shower of driving perch teams, but has spun off a line of perch/qh breeders for riding horses. She bears a strong resemblance to my other perch x when they are next to each other, except that my other perch has a more refined look and baby doll head from the arab cross. Ultimately it doesn't matter I guess, as she is going to be my next backcountry camping/trail pony. :)

Are you going to do anything w/her now while she is pregnant? Or wait till after she foals? She is a lovely young horse. The Arab Cross gelding is a cutie, too!

Thanks!!

I have a lot of work ahead of me to just get her trained on the ground before foaling. She is BARELY halter broke or human handled! In the past couple of weeks, the previous owner left her halter/lead rope on 24/7 in a small pen to catch her (the old cowboy way to halter break). But now that she is on 9 acres of open pasture, all bets for easy catching are off. At this point, she comes right up to me, takes treats nicely from hand, and I can rub the tip of her nose/lips, but that's about it. We did leave the halter on her until we get through the initial vet & farrier visits on Tuesday, and even though I hate to admit it, I expect we will have to tranq her to get everything done. I wouldn't even bother to rush this but she needs her rhino vac and her feet are in desperate need of attention, as it is obvious she has never had her feet done before.

But afterwards, the halter comes off and we will begin at scratch with teaching her to accept human contact and then the halter and so on. How far we get before foaling will be determined by her.
