Lovely pictures. I'm so glad Solon posted. She's always right on the money with draft advice. Personally, I only use straight alfalfa hay for treats. We use mixed grass for the bulk of our winter feed.

Thanks guys. I've done some shopping and found some small square bales that are 20% alfalfa with grass. Does this sound a bit better? I'm considering this because the hay is $4.00 a bale.

We feed mostly Alfalfa

only to the growing Trakhener in the barn, for everyone else it is just too much "high-octane" fuel.

I've got my whole crew on grass hay, in part because it's not good for my draft or my fat pony :) The other two, a paint and a Hanoverian filly do just fine, in fact the filly is so much more sane off alfalfa!!

you can feed mostly alfalfa hay, but not as much...about 2/3-3/4 of what you would feed a mostly grass hay...

Ok .. so I found hay that is a timothy/grass mix with no alfalfa and its located closer and the price is comparitive. Geesh... horses and their feed...lol.
