Red face My Belgian QH is really a Belgian Perch!

Well----I got my boy Moose today. The previous owners had been calling him a Belgian QH---I didnt know the difference so never thought diff.

When we got him home I was reading his coggins sheet and it said he was 1/2 Belgian 1/2 Perch.

The test was done by the Ranch that owned him first last November. Who knew? LOL

Well Nikki from Empire Farms (refer to my post about empire farms) has percherons and says he is identical to a percheron. She said she thinks he looks more Perch than ANYTHING.

So it has been a very interesting and refreshing day. My boy is home and learning to take care of him the right way is going to be a fun process.

So do I call him a Belgian Perch Cross....or how do you refer to him?
Anything about the Perch breed I should know?

He's a draft cross. Without pictures it's hard to tell if he's got more perch look or belgian.

I have a purebred Percheron, I think they are the spicier of the draft breeds. They have a lot less feathering than some of the other breeds. Other than that, they are about the same.

I plan to take pics of him tomorrow. When daylight comes out. Nikki says he looks more perch than anything. I wouldnt know.
She said you can see a little bit of the Belgian in his face. But everything else looks perch to her.

Ill get new pics tomorrow.

Welcome to draft crosses! I've got 2 Belgian x Percheron geldings. Very smart and quick learners. Can't wait to see your pictures.

Nice. Looks like he's going to stay dark. Mine grayed out. Both my guys have manes that fall exactly the same way. Watch that fence! When I first got them, they never bothered a fence. After a couple of months that changed to they never bother a fence--during the day. Somewhere just before dawn is when they did their own special fence renovation. I mean crushed wire and broken posts. Thankfully, a hot wire cured that.

I'd be rethinking that fence. Not good quality for a draft horse. All it's going to take is for him to figure out he can either sit on it or push and he's going to get out.

Looks more Perchie than anything.

Yea we are planning on getting a HOT WIRE put up. Working on that in next 2 weeks. His previous owners have the same thing I do and he never got out. So he has behaved so far. But I don't trust it.

He's in a different place so he may get the urge to go exploring. That's what my boy did when I first got to where I'm boarding now. He sat on the gate and wandered around the property. I wouldn't trust that fence either. Glad to hear you'll be adding some hot wire, at least that will encourage him to stay away from the fence all together.
