Percheron Showing Advice

I have an 11 month old percheron that I would like to Show in Halter classes and showmanship this summer. I know little about the show world and was wondering if anyone had any advice for me or a good book I can read up on.

How is his mane and tail suppose to be? He parks real nice, but does he have to I the show ring?

Thank you!

My friend owns a Clydesdale mare and she used to take him in halter classes as well. I had the opportunity to help her out one afternoon, before a show. For the mane and tail, I suggest using conditioner when you bathe him, to give it a shine and to bring out some of the snarls. We braided her gelding's mane and tail, but it's not required for some shows that the mane and tail be braided. It looked good to me, though!
Just remember to keep his feet lined up and standing still when your in the ring. Judges will usually take off points if the horse is moving all over the place, or his back feet are not aligned.
I also suggest getting him to lower his head, but don't drag it down when the judge is coming near him. You shouldn't have to force him to lower his head, and judges like to see a relaxed horse.
Any other questions?
Sorry if I'm not very good at this - I haven't been to a show in a while!

Braid the mane and tail and make sure you use the white show halter/bridle. You can get them online just about everywhere. Search on YouTube for draft horse show videos, you will learn a lot from them.

Not really sure but I think draft horses are suppose to do something else where your stock horses would pivot in a showmanship pattern. Not sure but I heard something like that somewhere.

Actually you do whatever the pattern is that the judge specifies. If it's a breed show then they may do something different. It really just depends. If it's an open show, it's the same as every other horse.

Thank you all for your help, that is definetly a start! Any reason for the White halter/bridle? Also does it really matter if its one or the other? Or does it just depend on the show? You-tube, great idea!
