Wanted: Help With Percheron Bloodlines

So right now I've been looking at weanling Percheron Fillies, and I'm hoping to go all out one day and get a girl that's registered and papered. I'd love to train her for showing, and perhaps aim for the Royal Winter Fair as a far away, not in a million years goal - a girl can dream, can't she?

But every time I look at a Percheron I get lost in those big dark eyes. And then I look at the pedigrees and I get... more lost. The names mean little to me. I've worked with unregistered Percherons before, and I love the look and mannerisms of the ones I've worked with - even the crazy ones. But how do you judge breeding in Percheron? I'm decent when it comes to conformation - not pro, but I can spot the nasty conformation faults, and I know what I like in an adult Percheron's conformation.

So the question is, what do you look for in bloodlines with Percherons? And are there any lines that are good to be leary of?

Thanks in advance. :)

I don't know a lot about percherons, but some of the more well known names that make for amazing horses are:

Unfortunately, breeding percherons is very trendy. Combine that with a fairly small gene pool (less than 3000 registered foals born in North America) and it gets really hard for them not to all be related. The most popular sire in the last decade, MG's Prince, can probably be traced back in 50% of those foals. His get tend to be the more modern, stretchy taller build that sell well even in this economy.

The true ablility to read a Percheron pedigree is to understand and follow the Dam lines. More emphasis is put in the mares than the stallions. (true for all draft breeds) Living in Ontario, you have a unique opportunity. Ryanday Farms and of course Blackhome are in the area. I'd figure out a way to weasle into their lives for a weekend.

Thanks! :) I just checked out Ryanday and just "wow" ... beautiful horses! I'm definitely going to see if they need an extra hand for a weekend or two! Will do more digging on the names and see what I find.

Thanks a bunch guys :)

Other Ontario breeders that put out recognizable good quality horses that are in the US market are Windy Hill, Glencal and Walkerbrae. (One's I like) Canadian percherons are often imported for outcrossing on popular US lines. Come to think about it, I don't know if Blackhome is still around. You see less and less of the Blackhome name. I know Helen Black died a few years ago and I'm not sure about Reg. Seems like one of the kids would keep the program going.

I recommend looking at all the show results from the past years and see what winning check all over Canada and US shows. That's how I picked my bloodlines
